I got 99 problems but my lashes ain’t one!

If I were to be deserted on some island and was asked, what three things would you take? Well, number one; my eyebrow pencil, two; my lash technician and well I’m still thinking about the last one.
I’m obsessed with fab eyebrows and full lashes. I think even more so because I am not blessed with uber long thick lashes and full eyebrows like some. So when I fill them in with false ones it’s as if my face has had an instant face lift #whosethatgirl. Ok but heres the thing we can’t have this dramatic look all the time because you need to remember to look after your own natural lashes. Using false lashes, I’m talking individual ones full time can damage your natural lash.

So ladies let me give you the pros and cons of using individual false lashes and the scoop on how to look after them once you’ve  had them installed! yay.

Pros:

  • Gives your eyes a more dramatic appearance and amplifies your eye makeup
  • Accentuates your natural lashes if you want to go for more of a natural look

Cons:

  • Can be damaging to the natural lash if used for a prolonged period
  • If not looked after and cleaned properly could result in infection
  • Allergic reaction due to eyelash glue

Don’t hesitate to talk to the lash technician, ask her questions about the lashes she is using. Ask about the glue and how to look after them once they are installed. This is important because hello! its around your eyes.

Things to consider before and after your lashes are installed:

Make sure your eyelids are clean and you have no mascara residue

I prefer when I go and do my lashes to have minimal makeup on. This is because your lashes need to be clean and have all traces of residue or mascara completely off. This makes it easier for the technician to start without having to deal with cleaning off heavy makeup from your eyes.

Avoid getting your lashes wet for the next 24hrs e.g. avoid washing your face, taking a shower, swimming, steam rooms, sauna, etc

This is to ensure that you give the glue enough time to set and bond to the lashes. Be mindful when you wash your face every day.

When you wash your face be mindful of your lashes

You don’t want to dent them or bruise them wash your face as normal avoiding your lashes. Then to get your eyelid area just as squeaky clean you can use an earbud and just swipe it across your eyelids removing any excess build up of dirt.

Avoid using face products which contain oil

The oil products cause the glue to lose its bonding strength causing your lashes to fall out sooner and lose volume. So when using makeup use oil free eyeliners and eye dips. When removing your makeup remover use oil free based ones.

Brush your lashes out in the morning

In the morning brush your lashes with a small lash brush which looks exactly the same as your mascara brush. Your lash technician should give you one for free after your application. If not I’m sure you could buy one at your local drug store. Brushing the lashes removes any residues and possible eye boogers that maybe stuck to the lash.

Be mindful when you sleep with your lashes

Ensure you don’t crush them while you sleep this sometimes can be a bit uncontrollable but if you want to be extra prissy then hey.

Remove your false lashes on time

This will avoid extra strain on your natural lashes and cause less damage from lashes falling out. Generally these types of lashes last for about 2-3 weeks depending on how well you look after them. You could also consider filling them in-between e.g after 2 weeks getting them re-filled. Give breaks in between removing and reapplying to give your natural lash time in-between to rest.

So in closing false lashes can be a lovely natural lash enhancer but can also be very high maintenance and a costly love affair. Do your research ensure the technician is a professional and practices proper hygiene while working. I am not a professional just giving personal advice from doing my own research and getting my own lashes done as well as speaking to the amazing technician who does mine.
